Normally the vault lives in your user profile. The portable builds keep it beside the app instead, so the app and your catalog can travel together.
Getting it
Download the portable build — AssetManager_…_portable.tar.gz for Linux or AssetManager_…_portable.zip for Windows — and unpack it into a folder of your own (or onto a USB stick). It holds the app and a small marker file, assetmanager-portable. On first launch the app creates AssetManagerData beside them, and keeps the vault and your preferences there.
Settings → This vault shows Storage as portable when it is on.
Moving it
Move the app, the assetmanager-portable marker and the whole AssetManagerData folder together. If the data folder is there but the marker is missing, the app stops with a message rather than quietly opening a different (or empty) catalog.
Good to know
- The vault is encrypted wherever it is: a lost USB stick shows nothing without your passphrase or recovery key.
- Price-feed keys are kept in each computer's own keyring, so enter them again on each computer you use.
- Backups still go where you choose — keep one off the stick, too. See Backups.
- Portable mode works with the Linux AppImage and the standalone Windows executable. It is not available for installed copies (.deb, .msi, macOS), whose folders may be shared, read-only or replaced by an update — nor for a copy run from Program Files.
- On Windows the portable app needs Microsoft's WebView2, which Windows 10 and 11 normally include.
